Flocked wall coverings appeared in 17th century Europe as an affordable imitation of cut velvet hangings used in aristocratic mansions. Instead of weaving fabric, artisans would coat paper with glue, dust it with finely cut wool or silk fibres (“flock”) to create a raised, velvety pattern. This made the walls look rich without the price of actual velvet. By the 18th century, flocked designs were fashionable across Britain and France, especially in drawing rooms and “best” sitting rooms, with red flock symbolising warmth, opulence, and status. In the 1960s–70s, manufacturers like Mayfair modernized flocking by applying it to vinyl-coated paper, making it washable and durable. They used bright psychedelic colours—cherry-red, tangerine, magenta, and lime—and reimagined classic damask motifs to suit the era’s mix of hippie freedom and glamour.
