One of Morris & Co.’s most enduring wallpaper patterns, Sunflower, was officially registered by William Morris in 1879. The design centres on a bold sunflower head surrounded by tulips, smaller flowers, and winding grapevines. As one of Morris & Co.’s more affordable wallpapers, Sunflower became a bestseller and was produced in several colourways, most commonly in yellow and green tones. This celebration of nature wasn’t purely decorative—Morris admired the sunflower itself, describing it in his 1880 lecture Making the Best of It as a “latecomer to our gardens,” yet “interesting and beautiful,” with nectar-rich blooms that attract bees and butterflies.
