After printing, the vinyl surface was often heat-embossed to add texture, then passed through heated curing rollers to fuse the plastisol and lock in the inks, creating the wipeable, long-lasting finish vinyl became famous for. Manufacturers produced both vinyl-coated papers (lighter, for domestic use) and solid-vinyl wallcoverings (thicker and more durable), each with its own look and feel. Metallic details, such as gold highlights, were added using reflective metallic inks that sit on the smooth vinyl surface and catch the light beautifully.
