Did You Know?

This 1970s flocked damask wallpaper by Nairn & Co. uses a deep emerald green colourway that visually recalls the intense green pigments widely used in 19th-century wallpapers, including Scheele’s Green and Paris Green, which were notable for their strong visual impact in Victorian interiors before their toxicity became widely recognised. These arsenic-based pigments were later found to pose a particular risk in damp or poorly ventilated rooms, where deterioration of the pigment could contribute to the release of arsenic-containing dust or particles within the interior environment. While produced in a much later industrial context, this damask design sits within a long tradition of richly saturated green wallpapers used across interior design history, and is entirely free from arsenic.
