Floral wall decoration predates wallpaper, appearing in ancient Roman frescoes and in China by 200 BCE through painted papers inspired by silk traditions. By the 15th and 16th centuries European block-printed papers imitated textiles, and by the 17th and 18th centuries floral wallpaper was firmly established in Britain, shaped by Indian chintz and botanical illustration — making it one of the earliest continuous motifs in interior history.
