Damask takes its name from Damascus, a centre of silk weaving in the medieval period where richly patterned textiles were traded across Europe. The motif’s symmetrical, scrolling design became a symbol of status in 17th and 18th century interiors, long before it was adapted for wallpaper. When transferred from woven silk to printed paper, damask retained its association with formality, permanence, and historic grandeur.
